February 21, 2018 -- Dear All,
Our next concert is this Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7:00 PM, at First United Method Church Boerne (see map below). While the concert begins at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary, students are required (graded) to arrive at 6:30 in UNIFORM to uncase, tune, and warm-up in designated church rooms. This is the only way we can be ready to perform by 7:00 PM. This is a formal concert, therefore, high school students must wear district issued tuxedos/black gowns, and middle school students must wear all black (except Mrs. J's first period class as they will wear their Orchestra polos with black pants). All students must wear black dress shoes, long black socks/hose, and black belts (as needed).
As a reminder, no food/drink/water in the sanctuary, chapel, or music rooms. Students are not allowed to play other instruments in other rooms (such as pianos, hand bells, etc.). Parking is limited, but there is parking available at the intersection of James and Turner, between James and Tyson, and the Bowling Alley.
Lastly, the concert begins with BMSS Beginning Orchestra. Since space is limited, these students may leave with their parents after they are finished. However, if they stay, they must sit with their parents. There will be a short intermission after the Beginning Orchestra performs.
This is a special concert in that we are preparing many of our groups for UIL Competition. The Pre-UIL concert experience gives our students a chance to play their UIL music for an audience BEFORE they play for judges, and since UIL performances occur during school hours, it gives parents a chance to hear the music.
We look forward to performing for you in another venue in the community. The concert is free and everyone is welcome!
P.S. - We would love to see you at UIL! Family and Friends are welcome to attend free UIL performances at Clark High School, 5150 De Zavala Rd., San Antonio, TX 78249
- CHS Honor Orchestra plays March 1st at 1:40pm
- BMSS Varsity Orchestra plays March 7th at 9:55am
- BMSS Honor Orchestra plays March 8th at 11:55am
Thank you, Deana Johnson
January 22, 2018 -- Dear Students and Parents,
First of all, congratulations to the Champion High School orchestra students who participated in UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest last Friday night! We had 29 students perform, which is a substantial increase over the 11 that competed last year. In order to advance to State competition, students must play a solo from the Class I list by memory, which is the most difficult music listed in the Prescribed Music List, and earn a Superior rating from a UIL judge. Congratulations to all the students who participated, and especially to the following students who advanced to the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble competition in Austin on May 26: Bailey Buie (9th grade), Anna Coulter (11th grade), and Claire Brown (12th grade).
The Hill Country Youth Orchestra has arrived in Boerne! Auditions for the Boerne campus are now open (6th, 7th, & 8th grade only). Auditions will take place February 4th and weekly rehearsals will begin February 12th. To schedule an audition, visit the website and click the link near the Boerne campus description found on the homepage: http://hcyo.org/. Please share the good news with families who may be interested in this program. Please find attached the audition form which includes additional information.
Please take note: Boerne Performing Arts allows BCOPO to raise money for scholarships through concessions at their performances. The scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors in the Champion Orchestra program. Please contact Susan Beningo (CC) ASAP if you can volunteer tomorrow night or donate (store bought) cookies for this event. PLEASE "like" and read the Boerne Charger Orchestra Parent Organization posts on FaceBook. This is a great place to stay informed, along with the BCOPO website: http://www.boerneorchestra.com/
Lastly, our next concert is February 27 at Boerne First United Methodist Church at 7:00 PM.
Thank you, Deana Johnson
January 17, 2018 -- Dear Students and Parents,
Despite ice, scheduled workdays, and Holidays, it is as they say in the music business - "the show must go on!" However, since we lost a day of piano accompanying with Mrs. Strawn, she has graciously reduced the piano accompanying fee to $30.00 for a rehearsal and performance for UIL High School Orchestra Solo & Ensemble Contest this Friday, Jan. 19, at Champion HS. She will work with students during their class periods tomorrow and after school as needed. She will also be here on Friday as needed. If your child is in need of an accompanist, please send cash or check for $30.00 made payable to Pat Strawn, and a separate check made payable to CHS for UIL entry fee of $9.00/student.
The UIL judge is coming from NISD where they are administering Final Exams this week (for Fall semester). Due to the cancellation of school yesterday, their final exam schedule has been amended. As soon as I reach the judge (for his time of arrival), I will post a sign-up sheet for students to schedule their solo or ensemble performance time.
Tomorrow night, BCOPO will sponsor a "spirit night" at Fuzzy's Tacos from 5:00-9:00 PM - please see attachment. Please invite your family and friends to socialize, eat fantastic food, and support the orchestra in one fell swoop! Since we were unable to have our monthly BCOPO meeting last night, please feel free to talk to board members while you are there with ideas, suggestions, etc. The board thanks you for helping and supporting the students!
Please be on the look-out for another up-date from me today or tomorrow with solo & ensemble information/sign-up sheet. Students, don't forget to bring your piano accompaniments for Mrs. Strawn.
Thank you,Mrs. J
January 12, 2018 -- Happy New Year! 🎉🎈
I hope everyone is off to a great start in 2018! With that said, the orchestra is off to a great start this year. Through grants and the help of BCOPO, we have secured 10 cellos for BMSS, 2 cellos for CHS, and 2 additional basses (on order and due any day) at CHS! This is a great help to a lot of students, but especially for those students who are not allowed to ride buses with their instruments.
No surprises here! All the orchestra students were good this year and Santa rewarded them...a few students received charCOAL facial masks, one student received KOHL (gift cards) in his stocking, and some students received new phones and new instruments! With a new semester, new year, and new phones, here are needed orchestra codes and links again:

Solo & Ensemble information:
UIL Solo & Ensemble will be held at CHS on January 19, from 5:00-8:30 PM. (Students will sign up for performance times in class on Tuesday.) The Orchestra Room will serve as the warm-up room while the stage will serve as the performance room. Since this is an extra-curricular competition, participants must be academically eligible. UIL FEE: $9.00/person made payable to CHS by 4:30 PM, Jan. 19.
For those students who selected music with piano accompaniments, they may provide their own piano accompanists or they may use the piano accompanist I have secured for the contest. Her name is Pat Strawn. She will accompany students for $40.00/entry (which covers two rehearsals and the performance); rehearsing with students during class and after school (as needed) on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Thursday, Jan. 18. PIANO FEE: $40.00/entry made payable to Pat Strawn by 4:30 PM, Jan. 19.
Solo & Ensemble will be held at BMSS on April 17.
Please attend the BCOPO meeting this Tuesday in the Library at BMSS from 7:00-8:00 PM. I hope to see you there! ❤
Thank you for everything and Happy New Year! Mrs. J
December 5, 2017 -- Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy Hanukkah! If you are having trouble getting into the spirit of the season, we will remedy the situation in 7 days! Please join us in the Auditorium at Champion High School on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 7:00 PM. It seems the sense of wonder only comes through the eyes of a child, and this is the one time of year most of us can relive that sense of wonder in simple things like snowflakes and the scent of a Balsam fir. The part we cherish most is the time we have with the ones we love. With that in mind, I am asking everyone to bring a dessert, coffee, etc. to share at a reception after the concert. Please be on the lookout for a sign-up Genius request from one of our officers. I would really like to meet all of you and I would also like you to meet the musicians. The most important thing in life, is life itself. Let's enjoy the company we have in each other after the concert! The concert is free and open to the public.
Students are required to wear district issued uniforms:
High School Orchestras
Black DRESS shoes (no athletic shoes/beach wear)
Black hose or long black socks (no ankle socks)
District Issued Uniforms
Middle School Orchestras
Black DRESS shoes (no athletic shoes/beach wear)
Black hose or long black socks (no ankle socks)
Black slacks or floor length skirts
District Issued Black Shirts (Honor Orchestra)
District Issued Black Polos (JV Orchestra)
For this concert only, students (and parents too!) may wear festive jewelry, antlers, Santa hats, etc. Students may also decorate their instruments as instructed in class.
For full credit, students must be seated in their assigned (reserved) seats, wear district issued uniforms, have music and (uncased) instruments in the Auditorium at 6:30, and stay for the entire concert. (Mrs. R's students will uncase/tune in the Elective Hallway while Mrs. J's students will uncase/tune in the Orchestra Room.)
REMINDER: Honor Orchestra/WW/BR/PERC have rehearsal after school on Tuesday, Dec. 12, from 4:30-5:00. Student officers need to report to the orchestra room immediately after school to set stage for the rehearsal, then after the rehearsal, set stage for Beginning Orchestra, and decorate. Student officers will be provided a dinner snack. (They need to bring uniforms to school as they may not have time to go home.)
Lastly, please consider purchasing a music ornament created by one of our very own orchestra students for only$5 as a memento of the 2017 Orchestra Winter Concert.
Thank you for your support! Deana Johnson
NOVEMBER 10, 2017 - The next BCOPO meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 14, 7:00 PM, in the Library at Boerne Middle School South. One point of discussion will be the Winter Concert which is scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 12, 7:00 PM, in the Auditorium at Champion High School. Some of you have inquired about starting concerts at 6:30. I certainly don't mind, but a change of this nature impacts a lot of people and makes for perfect discussions at BCOPO meetings. hint hint ; )
Since all orchestra students will be dressed in formal attire for the Winter Concert, I'm looking for a couple of special someones to help with uniform distribution at Champion High School. We need to get uniforms out soon as possible in order for parents to have time to hem dresses and pants. Any volunteers? If so, please reply. (I will need background clearance for helpers - minimum 4 day turn-around.) I will be at Champion next Tuesday and Thursday, and my classes meet from 10:30-12:00, and 1:00-4:00.
Lastly, BMSS Honor and Varsity orchestras will receive black shirts on Monday (for those who were ordered shirts). Thank you, Mrs. Ortegon, for outfitting all the BMSS Honor and Varsity students with black shirts! You are awesome!
Thank you to every parent for the parts each of you played to make it a successful evening! ❤
I look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday evening at 7:00 at BMSS! Thank you, Mrs. J
OCTOBER 18, 2017 - Our Fall concert is nearly here and we are very excited about it! It takes place this Tuesday, Oct. 24. The inspiration for the concert is the great State of Texas! The title of the concert is, "The Symphony Goes Wild West!" We will be performing at the Boerne Main Square Plaza starting at 7:00 PM, but festivities begin at 6:00 with concessions, face painting, an Instrument Petting Zoo, an Instrument Corral, and more! Yes, you heard that right! Hillje Music Center, Alamo City Strings, and Hearts' Home Acoustics will assist us in offering youngsters in the audience the chance to touch and play stringed instruments. I assure you, they are tame instruments and they will not bite. Free of charge, Hillje Music Center and Alamo City Strings have graciously agreed to repair instruments you donate to the Instrument Corral. This is your chance to donate an unused instrument to a young musician in the Houston area who has lost his or her instrument to Hurricane Harvey. The instruments will be repaired at no cost and sent to music programs affected by Hurricane Harvey. (Is there anyone who can help ship them to Houston? Please email me directly if you can help sponsor this very important community project.) The Hill Country Youth Orchestra will also have a booth where you can inquire about the newly formed youth orchestra in Boerne. In addition, the Hill Country Council for the Arts will have a booth with information about up-coming events in our community. Please visit the all the booths - you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it!
Please note: This is an outdoor concert, and as such, you need to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on. The concert is free, but please come on an empty stomach. The orchestra booster club, BCOPO, will be selling Bush's Chicken, tea, and Paul's Gourmet Popcorn. Since this is a district event, we ask that you do not bring outside food or beverage per district policy. Your support of the orchestra program is very much appreciated!
Concert Dress - WESTERN! All musicians are asked to wear long jeans (or khakis), boots (or sneakers), plaid shirts or plain t-shirts, vests (if you have one), chaps (if you have them), German heritage clothing, Mexican heritage clothing, etc.
NOT ALLOWED: shorts, capris, cowboy hats (except bass players, singers, piano), props (such as fake pistols, etc.). Dresses must be knee length. Our hope is that everyone, students and parents, dress up for this concert!
Orchestra students - Report to designated areas for roll (grade), unpacking cases, and tuning at the following times:
4:30 CHS Orchestra Officers for stage set-up/decorations, etc.
6:00 CHS 7th/8th period orchestras for 6:15 "run-through"
6:15 CHS 6th period orchestra for 6:30 sound check with Guest Artists
6:30 All BMSS orchestra students
After students perform, they will put away their instruments and sit with their parents.
Weather - In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place in the Auditorium at Champion High School. (The directors will make that determination in advance of the concert and announced by email and Remind.)
This is the only outdoor concert planned this year. Let's fully enjoy it! Thank you and Yeehaw! Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Reitenga
SEPTEMBER 21, 2017 - Many thanks to those of you who attended our first BCOPO booster club meeting and Open House at BMSS, for donations you made to BCOPO, and for everyone's timely submission of orchestra forms/fees. If you were unable to attend the meetings, please allow me to catch you up on everything:
- The Fall Orchestra concert date has been officially moved to Oct. 24 to accommodate Special Guest Artists. The inspiration for the concert is the great State of Texas! The title of the concert is, "The Symphony Goes Wild West!" We will be performing at the Boerne Main Square Plaza starting at 7:00 PM, but festivities will begin at 6:15 with concessions, face painting, an Instrument Petting Zoo, an Instrument Corral, and more! Yes, you heard that right! Hillje Music Center and Alamo City Strings will assist us in offering youngsters in the audience the chance to touch and play violins, violas, cellos, and basses. I assure you, they are tame instruments and they will not bite. Free of charge, the companies have also graciously agreed to repair instruments that you donate to the Instrument Corral that evening. The instruments will be repaired at no cost and sent to music programs affected by Hurricane Harvey. (Is there anyone who can deliver them to Houston? Please email me directly if you can help sponsor this very important community project or know of a program in need.) Please note: This is an outdoor concert, and as such, you need to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on. Please invite everyone you know to the concert - it's free and open to the public, and please come on an empty stomach. The orchestra booster club, BCOPO, will be selling Bush's Chicken, tea, and Paul's Gourmet Popcorn. Your support of the orchestra program is very much appreciated!
- The orchestra students at CHS had a great time at the Back-to-School Party in August. Now it's time to celebrate the new school year with the orchestra students at BMSS. On Oct. 4 we will walk next door to AMC Classic Boerne 11 to see a 4:30 showing of The LEGO Ninjago Movie. The GM has given us a great deal - $10 for movie and snack pack. I need a couple of chaperones to attend the movie with Ms. Reitenga and I, and a BCOPO representative to collect $10 (CASH ONLY) on Monday, Oct. 2, from 8:00-8:45 AM. If you want to chaperone, please send $10 after you have been cleared for background check. I can send a form with your child tomorrow, but you need to return it to the front office at BMSS on Monday (as it takes time to process forms). Once your name is cleared, then I will contact you for payment.
- In case you didn't get the link to the orchestra calendar in a previous email, please "bookmark" this webpage: View Charger Orchestra Calendar calendar
- As stated in the Orchestra Handbook, every student needs to have an Essential Element Method Book for class. My BMSS 1st period orchestra class needs Essential Technique for Strings Book 3 (same as Essential Technique 2000 - purple heading at top of book) and my 2nd period orchestra class and all high school orchestra classes need Advanced Technique for Strings (Book 4 in the Essential Elements series - gold colored book). If you still need a book, I have some reserved for you at school. Make checks payable to Hillje Music: $9.00 for Book 3 (includes tax), $10.00 for Book 4 (includes tax), and $13.00 for Piano Accompaniment Book 4 (includes tax). Students have a G major scale grade on Monday due in Google Classroom. I have made copies of the required pages for this test, but after this week, students must have their own method books due to copyright restrictions.
- Please return the BCOPO forms that were sent home last week. One lucky couple's form will be drawn at the Fall Concert for a free brunch for two at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club. (Donations are not required for entering the drawing.) In case your form didn't make it home, I have attached one to this email. Good luck!
- We have officially started an exciting new club at Champion HS: Champion High School Future Music Educators (CTFME). It is sponsored by TMEA and the music directors at CHS. Information will be distributed to music students in the next few days. Please encourage your child to attend the first meeting - date TBA. I assure you, there is something of value for every music student in this club.
Thank you for everything! Hee Haw! Mrs. J
SEPTEMBER 11, 2017 - Greetings! On behalf of the BMSS and CHS directors and BCOPO officers, we welcome you to the first orchestra meeting of the school year tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM in the Library at Champion HS. I hope each and everyone of you can make it - parents and students alike! (In fact, students who attend the meeting will receive extra credit!) This is your chance to be in the know about all things orchestra, to represent your child, your thoughts, and ideas, and to contribute to the orchestral well-being of the orchestra program. Your presence and ideas are valued, and in the process you validate your child's choice of elective. We are all in this together! If you haven't already paid required district fees for orchestra, you may pay your child's respective director at the meeting. Fees: $60/instrument fee (for qualifying students at BMSS or CHS) and $25 uniform fee (all CHS orchestra students). See you tomorrow at 7:00 PM Champion Library! Thank you, Deana Johnson
AUGUST 22, 2017 - Here is a link to the 2017-2018 Charger Orchestra Calendar so that all students and parents can have easy access to it. Events are also listed on the BCOPO website (www.boerneorchestra.com) under the "Calendar of Events" tab.
